Capacitors

What is a capacitor? Essentially, you can think of a capacitor as a resevoir. In this case, this resevoir allows an electrical circuit to store an electrical charge for later use, or in some cases, to create a high voltage charge for specialized applications. Some electrical components require a larger amount of electricity than can be easily provided by the electrical wiring in most homes. This is where capacitors come in. In combination with other electrical components, capacitors can help change the level or rate of electrical flow and provide a large 'jolt' if needed - such as with starting or stopping an electric motor.

Hard start capacitors are used in a variety of systems. In Minisplit, and central, air conditioning and heating systems, they are used to assist the starting of the compressor and motors to prevent premature wear. They are also one of the most common parts to fail in a heating and cooling system.
